An open world Pokemon Snap riff

This is Pallet Scanner, a short game about observing Pokemon in nature. I put it together over the past week, during my holiday break, while watching the first season of the anime.

I've always liked the concept of Pokemon Snap a lot more than playing the actual game, so this is a pitch for another way to make a game with similar themes. Some differences include:

  • The player can wander freely around an open level that is littered with mons to discover.
  • The photography mechanic has been replaced with a scanner, which is a simple but fun stand-in for what it feels like to try to identify wildlife through binoculars.
  • I've largely ditched a point-system. For some, will make the game feel incomplete, but I think there's value in depicting animals as something other than resources for the player to exploit.

The game will appeal to anyone who is fond of walking simulators like Proteus or Bernband, in addition to people who are hungry for more types of game that use the Pokemon universe in new and novel ways.

Thanks for reading, and, if you play the game, I'd love to hear your feedback in the comments. Happy new year!
